For most homes, once a year — ideally before summer. With pets, allergies, cooking fumes or long running hours, every six months. Regular cleaning removes mould and smells from the filter, coil and fan, brings back airflow, lowers your power bill and helps the compressor last longer.
In a properly sealed system the refrigerant does not get used up, so after a refill it should in theory last a long time. If your AC stops cooling again within a year or two, there is usually a leak at a pipe joint or elsewhere. The leak must be found and fixed before refilling, or the gas will just keep escaping.
